Emma H. from Austin, Texas, is this week’s Honorable Mention Winner. She sent us her story illustrating her leadership in her high school band.  The following is an excerpt from her story:

“This past school year I was the clarinet section leader of my high school band and had to be a leader every single day. During marching season at 6:45 every morning, I had to be the most awake clarinet player and get my section motivated. During class I had to be the best player out of my section and help other players with their parts. Every after school practice I had to put my school stress behind me and focus on leading my section. I’ve learned that being a leader is not just about leading people sometimes and not others. It’s about always playing the part and becoming a person that people can look up to all the time, no matter what time of day or where you are. I had the best time leading the Fall ’09 clarinets and cannot wait until school starts again to lead the Fall ’10 clarinets!!”

Congratulations, Emma!

Chase W. from Austin entered his story about Freshman football that illustrates this month’s theme of leadership. Batter Blaster selected him as this week’s Honorable Mention Winner. Our favorite part of his story was:

“I’ve always been thought of as a “leader,” with being the captain throughout my childhood years with both football and baseball. I just finished my freshman year of high school. My dad and I met with my high school football coach the summer before freshman year. He heard of my quarterback skills and that I had “the arm,” so it was no surprise to me when I was the starting quarterback of my freshman high school team. Even though I knew I was talented, I was worried about gaining the respect from my other teammates who I didn’t know. Turns out that on our first day of practice, many of my teammates were nervous too. We all made an agreement to have weekly team meetings off the field to make sure that everyone was communicating well between players, and that everyone knew about their strengths and weaknesses. We ended up doing really well for our first season together. Our coach said I was a great young leader because I unified a young group of guys that had never played together before into a team of football players that valued teamwork and drive.”

Sammy W. was selected as another one of our Share Your Story Honorable Mention Winners. Congratulations, Sammy for your admirable work as a Girl Scout camp counselor and making a difference in your community!

“Every summer, I trek out to Girl Scout Camp with my troop that I’ve been with since Brownies. But, this year, I was a camp counselor and responsible for 15 campers. One of my campers, Christina*, was particularly struggling during a tough hike through the woods. She told me that she was homesick and didn’t want to be at the camp for the full week. Her fellow troop member, Anastasia*, volunteered to help her through the hike to the finish. Anastasia comforted Christina and reassured her that although she probably missed her family very much, she’s safe and will have a great time with her Girl Scout family. Soon enough, Christina finished the hike and was rewarded with a new badge for her vest. She told me how proud of herself she was and decided to stay for the week. Anastasia was the cheerleader who helped Christina through her struggles, showing how important each Girl Scout member is for their troop.”

*Names have been changed because both children are minors.

Greg S. from Pflugerville, Texas sent us his story that illustrates teamwork. We admire your team’s efforts in remembering the importance and value of teamwork! Congratulations, Greg for being selected as one of our Honorable Mention Winners.

Here is one of our favorite excerpts from his soccer story that show how his team displayed teamwork during their district playoff tournament:

“It’s the last game of the tournament and it is halftime just a few moments before the second half will begin – our starting players are exhausted and everyone is in need of a pep talk. We’re down 3-2.We were surprised because our old coach attending the game. He came over and reminded us of how we used to play just a few seasons prior to our current one. He reminded us that a few players playing as individuals will not win the district playoffs and advance to the regional playoffs, but an entire team is needed for the victory. He tells us of the simple core values of soccer – and teamwork always resides at the top of the list.

Before we know it, the ref is blowing the whistle to notify each team that our players need to take the field. Before resuming the game, our captain reminded us that “It’s now or never, and we don’t have anything to lose” and it was our time to go out there and play our game – not the opponent’s game; not the ref’s game; but our game.

We didn’t end up winning the district playoff game, but it still felt like a victory for our team.”

FIRST Honorable Mention Winner!

Matthew T. of Round Rock, Texas has been selected as our Honorable Mention of the Week. Congratulations, Matthew! His story about coaching the 11U Wolf Pack is a perfect example that illustrates this month’s theme of teamwork.

Our favorite excerpt of the story was: “Actually, this story—a story about proving math wrong and showing what true determination can do—yielded an ending where the 11U Wolf Pack tied for 3rd place overall in the tournament.  No ceremonies, no group pictures, no headlines in the local newspaper; nothing but pure satisfaction and pride for a team of scrappy 11-year-olds who believed in themselves—and the fact that a team that finished 2-3-0 that weekend (the 11th –seed) actually finished tied for 3rd out of 12 total teams!  Sometimes stuff like that can only be explained by the most renowned math and baseball experts in the world with one simple response: “Just because.”  And sometimes a .400 winning percentage over the weekend is better than the team that went 2-1.”

Congratulations to the 11U Wolf Pack team and Matthew on your recognizable efforts of teamwork in baseball!
